Linea Madre
2023
project developed during an artist residency at Cerreto Guidi - Florence, Italy (curated by Caterina Fondelli)
digital photographs, print transfers, old fabrics & natural pigments.
'linea madre' is a personal reflection on grief and loss, in which I overlap layers of memories related to a space, recent moments with my mother and distant memories of my grandmother. It is as if, in relation to our family home, natural cycles and rhythms intertwine.
I used old family fabrics, photographs taken while picking olives with my mother, and taken during an artist residency near Florence.
It is a reflection on the different layers of memories and feelings, stains, objects, natural rhythms, and cycles, I relate to the Tuscan-Umbrian area of Italy. I used to visit this area, and our family home on the Tuscan-Umbrian border, with my grandmother, mother and sisters every year. It represents this grandmother-mother-daughter relationship, as well as our Tuscan family roots.
The olive trees in the garden were planted by my grandmother, before she passed away, with the intent of reuniting the family, specifically the women. The 'linea madre', the core line, connects us.
